With over 200 fans on hand at Shirley Povich Field to witness the first-ever Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League Home Run Derby, Chris Nann (College Park Bombers/Northern Kentucky) belted 14 home runs overall and eight in the championship round to win the title.
Nann put one shot over the 20-foot batter's eye wall in dead-center field and several into the tall trees over the left field fence en route to the championship. Nann beat Justin McClanahan (Youse's Maryland Orioles/Louisville), who hit two home runs in the championship round after leading the opening round with five. Each batter got ten outs to hit as many home runs as he could in the opening and championship rounds.
Nann tied Charlie Lenhard (Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts/Akron) and Josh Dietz (Bethesda Big Train/Bowling Green) with two home runs each in the opening round to force a tiebreaker five-out round. The burly righthander clearly heated up during the tiebreaker round, knocking four out of the park to edge Lenhard's two and Dietz's one.
Jimmy Dishmey-Perez (Maryland Redbirds/Morris (NJ) CC) and Derek Mechling (Rockville Express/Duquesne) also participated in the Home Run Derby.
