Bob Douglas becomes second Ripken League Commissioner
Commissioner Bill Spencer retires after five seasons of service
The Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League announces the retirement of Commissioner Bill Spencer, and his replacement by Deputy Commissioner Bob Douglas. Jerry Wargo has been selected to fill Bob Douglas' position.
Bill Spencer became the Commissioner at the founding of the League in 2005 and presided over its expansion from six teams in Maryland to its current number of eight, now including two teams in Northern Virginia. The League has also grown in status among summer wooden bat college leagues with several hundred of its former players in professional baseball at various levels and two of its teams consistently ranked nationally among summer teams. "I felt it was time for me to step down," Spencer said. "I'm pleased to be leaving the League on a sound footing and poised for additional growth. I think Bob Douglas is an excellent choice to lead the League in the future."
Bob Douglas has served as Deputy Commissioner for the past two years, during which time he has been focusing on fundraising. Bob has a background in advertising and marketing and over thirty years experience in both on field and off field management in baseball.
Jerry Wargo is a retired firefighter who has been involved in baseball for over two decades. He has coached at the high school level and operated a summer college baseball team. Jerry is currently a major league scout and the owner of Southern Maryland Baseball Camps, one of the top baseball camps on the East Coast.
