Dr. David Higgins named league's medical consultant

The Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League is pleased to announce the addition of David Higgins, MD as a sports medicine consulting physician in 2006. Dr. Higgins runs the Maryland Sports Medicine Center in Olney, Maryland, and will contribute his services to the athletes in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League for the upcoming season.
Dr. Higgins will provide post-injury consultations and care, as well as physical therapy for Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League athletes, free of charge. He will also serve as a consulting physician to the brand-new comprehensive athletic training program, which will
debut in 2006. Dr. Higgins will be the primary medical resource for the athletic trainers present at all league games.
The program will feature certified athletic trainers at every Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball league game, including the All-Star Game and League Championship Series. The trainers will provide pre- and post-game support to the athletes, as well as first response care in the event of an injury during the game.
"We are thrilled to have someone of Dr. Higgins' caliber and stature on board for 2006," said CRSCBL executive director Alex Thompson. "His generosity, enthusiasm, and expertise will go a long way to assist us in our commitment to the safety and well-being of our student-athletes."
David Higgins, MD
Dr. Higgins received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and has been in practice in Maryland since 1991. Dr. HIggins is board certified in orthopedic surgery, performed a fellowship in sports medicine at Hughston Orthopedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia, and completed his residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Higgins is an active member of the sports medical community at the Olympic, collegiate and high school levels. His experience ranges from serving as Assistant Medical Director at the Atlanta Olympic Games and Team Physician for USA Basketball championships, to serving as team physician with American University, Good Counsel High School and local all-star games. Dr. Higgins is also a Master Instructor with the Arthroscopy Association of Norht America and a member of the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine.
A native of the Washington area, Dr. Higgins is an involved member of the community. His work includes serving on the Board of Directors of Good Counsel High School and on the Board of Trustees of the Catholic Youth Organization. He is also a commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and a former Chief of Sports Medicine for the Navy.
