News & Notes: Orioles off to a hot start

Youse's Maryland Orioles have been the fastest out of the gate in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League thus far in 2007. Winners of eight of their first nine games, including the past six in a row, the Orioles have relied on a near-dominant pitching staff to take a 2.5 game lead over the second-place Rockville Express. The Orioles pitching staff has allowed just 1.23 runs per nine innings (through Sunday's games). Orioles pitchers have tossed three shutouts and struck out a combined 61 batters in 65.2 innings-pitched. Opponents are hitting just .157 off of them.

Offensively, the Express have paced the league, scoring 51 runs in eight games with a league-high 61 hits, nine doubles, six home runs, and 50 RBI. On the bases, Express runners have been successful in 15 of 18 tries.

Beyond the Orioles and Express, the standings have shuffled each night in a scramble to maintain position. The Maryland Redbirds have won their last two games to even out their record at 5-5 and take hold of third place in the league. The Redbirds benefitted from two straight losses by the Bethesda Big Train, who dropped to 4-5.

Foster (Big Train/Bowling Green), Swinson (O's/George Washington), Hamilton (O's/Charlotte) win first weekly awards

Outfielder Andrew Foster (Bowling Green State University) of the Bethesda Big Train has been named the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League Hitter of the Week for the week of June 8 to June 17. Foster led the Big Train with 11 hits in 28 at-bats (.393), including two doubles, a home run, and nine RBI. Foster scored six runs, collected 16 total bases (most in the league), and slugged at a .571 clip. He posted an on-base percentage of .424. Foster hit in seven of eight games, including the last five in a row. In a comeback win against the Herndon Braves on Saturday, Foster hit a three-run home run and knocked in four of the six Big Train runs.

Youse's Maryland Orioles pitchers Scott Swinson (George Washington University) and Bryan Hamilton (UNC-Charlotte) have been named the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League Co-Pitchers of the Week for the week of June 8 to June 17.

Swinson allowed just two hits in seven innings to pick up a win against the Bethesda Big Train on June 11. Four errors behind him led to a pair of unearned runs, but Swinson stayed focused, striking out seven batters and walking none. Swinson's outing was the longest by an Orioles starter during a week in which Orioles pitchers allowed just nine earned runs as a staff.

If Swinson was the leader of the Orioles' starting rotation during the first week, Hamilton was his counterpart for the bullpen. Hamilton made two appearances in long relief for the Orioles. Against the Herndon Braves on June 9, Hamilton allowed no runs on three hits and no walks over the final four innings of the game to pick up the save. In his next appearance, on Saturday against the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts, Hamilton allowed no runs on just one hit and two walks over 4.1 innings to pick up the win in relief. Hamilton struck out 13 batters in two appearances; four against the Braves and nine against the T'Bolts.
