Tonight's game postponed
Tuesday night's game between the Thunderbolts and Bombers has been postponed due to the heavy thunderstorms that hit the region over the weekend. Rain has now forced the cancellation of six straight Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League games.
News & Notes: Frederickson (Big Train/VA Tech) K's 13, home run pace continues
After a traffic jam at the top of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League standings to start the week, the leaderboard has stretched out, with the Bethesda Big Train grabbing a one-game lead over the second-place Rockville Express. Bethesda went 4-1 during the week, including a doubleheader sweep of the College Park Bombers on Tuesday, June 20. The Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts began the week on a four-game winning streak and lost just once to move into a share of third place with Youse's Maryland Orioles.
On Tuesday, Big Train starter
Evan Frederickson
(Virginia Tech) struck out the first seven Bombers hitters he faced, setting a league record for consecutive strikeouts. The big lefthander left the game after the sixth inning with 13 strikeouts and allowed just two hits and a run to pick up the victory.
The league-wide home run pace continued in week two, as six more baseballs left the park. The league has now combined for 18 home runs, just 13 longballs shy of last year's overall mark. At this pace, the league will eclipse last year's home run total by 20.
Preston Pehrson
(Big Train/Texas),
Charlie Lenhard
(T'Bolts/Akron), and
Chris Nann
(Bombers/Northern Kentucky) lead the way with three home runs apiece.
On Saturday, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League debuted at beautiful Terwilliger Bros. Field at Max Bishop Stadium on the campus of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. The Orioles and Maryland Redbirds played to a doubleheader split on the banks of College Creek. The newly renovated ballpark sits 30 yards from the water, providing a picture-perfect setting for a baseball game. Don't miss the games scheduled for Saturday, July 1 at 1 pm (Orioles vs. Redbirds, DH) and Saturday, July 8 at 1 pm (T'Bolts vs. Redbirds). It's worth the trip!
