News & Notes: Rain takes its toll on CRSCBL games

Rain forced the postponement of five consecutive games to start the third week of action in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League and six overall as the week came to a close.

After the weather had left its mark, the standings became crowded once again near the top. Three teams -- Youse's Maryland Orioles, the Bethesda Big Train, and the Rockville Express -- have 11 wins, with just one game separating them in the standings. The Orioles won four times in five tries last week to take a one-half game lead over the Big Train, who split their four games. The Express kept pace by taking three of five contests. The sixth place Maryland Redbirds sit under six games out of first place at the halfway point in the season. Anything can happen in the final four weeks of the regular season!

Despite the wet weather, three more baseballs left the parks in week three, bringing the league total to 21 midway through the season. The College Park Bombers have belted the most as a team (7), with slugger Chris Nann (Northern Kentucky) tied for the league lead at four. Charlie Lenhard (Akron) of the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts also has four longballs.

Week three also saw three pitchers top the 10 strikeout mark in games: the Bombers' Jake Smothers (Tennessee-Martin) fanned ten batters against the Orioles on June 30 and the Orioles' Michael Broyles (Mississippi) returned the favor in the same game! Broyles accomplished the feat in five innings of hitless relief after his starter teammate Hunter Harris (Texas) struck out nine himself. Fellow Oriole Daniel Cropper (UNC-Wilmington) struck out 13 Redbirds batters in a complete game on July 1, tying Evan Frederickson's (Virginia Tech) season-high for the Big Train, set on June 20.

Rhoden (Orioles/Alabama) and Cropper (Orioles/UNC-Wilmington) sweep weekly awards for the Orioles

Outfielder Ryan Rhoden (University of Alabama) of Youse's Maryland Orioles has been named the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League Hitter of the Week for the week of June 26 to July 2. Rhoden hit .421 and had a league-high eight hits and six RBI over the course of the week. Rhoden reached base in all five games and posted three-hit games twice during the week. In the second game of a doubleheader against the Maryland Redbirds on July 1, Rhoden went three-for-five with a double, a run scored, and five RBI, tying the CRSCBL season-high for RBI in a game. Honorable Mentions for Hitter of the Week include: Mike Murphy (Express/Maryland), Luke Adkins (Big Train/Southern Mississippi), Joel Gonzales (Bombers/Prince George's CC), and Eric Oliver (Express/Orange Coast).

Righthander Daniel Cropper (University of North Carolina - Wilmington) of Youse's Maryland Orioles has been named the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 26 to July 2. Cropper tied a CRSCBL season-high with 13 strikeouts in a complete-game win over the Maryland Redbirds on July 1. Cropper allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks to pick up the win in his first start of the season for the Orioles. Honorable mentions for Pitcher of the Week include: DJ Smith (Express/UC-Riverside), Michael Broyles (Orioles/Mississippi), Jake Smothers (Bombers/UT-Martin), and Hunter Harris (Orioles/Texas).
