News & Notes: Big Train and Orioles jump out in front

The Bethesda Big Train notched four wins in six games and Youse's Maryland Orioles won three of five this past week to push ahead in the race for first-place in the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League standings. The top two teams in the standings will receive byes in the first round of the six-team League Championship Series, July 31 to August 3.

After the Maryland Redbirds blanked the Big Train, 2-0, in the first game of the week on July 3, Bethesda ran off four wins in a row, including a 15-5 statement against the Orioles at home on July 8. The next day, it'd be the Redbirds again who broke up the win streak for Bethesda with a 5-4 victory. With one fewer game played for the Orioles this week, it was fitting that they'd find themselves just a half-game back of the Big Train at week's end.

The league-wide home run pace continued this week with a season-high nine baseballs leaving the ballparks from July 3 to July 9. The league has now hit a combined 31 home runs in 2006, matching 2005's season total. With three weeks to play, the 2006 edition of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League promises to set a high-water mark in the longball department. The Orioles finally got into the home run chase with their first four of the season coming in one week. The College Park Bombers lead the way with nine home runs as a team in 2006.

Of note: The Big Train's Matt Wickswat (Santa Clara) was three outs shy of a no-hitter against the Bombers on July 7. In the first game of a doubleheader, Wickswat cruised through the first six innings before Mike Rozak (Maryland) reached on an error to start the seventh and Chris Nann (Northern Kentucky) followed with a single. Wickswat got the next hitter to ground out before giving way to the bullpen. He finished with a one-hit victory.

Adkins (Big Train/Southern Miss) and Schurz (Redbirds/Radford) win weekly awards

Outfielder Luke Adkins (University of Southern Mississippi) of the Bethesda Big Train has been named the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League Hitter of the Week for the week of July 3 to July 9. Adkins hit in all six games for Bethesda during the week, including three multi-hit efforts. He also knocked in runs in each of the last five games during the week. Adkins finished the week with a .450 batting average on nine hits with three runs scored and seven RBI. He had three doubles, including two in one game against the Orioles on July 8. Honorable Mentions for Hitter of the Week include: Derek Mechling (Express/Duquesne), Steven Leach (Big Train/Jacksonville State), Nick Popp (T'Bolts/Belmont Abbey), and Matt Long (Big Train/Santa Clara).

Righthander Mike Schurz (Radford University) of the Maryland Redbirds has been named the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 3 to July 9. Schurz completed the SP/RP "slash" special, earning a win in his only start of the week and a save in his only relief appearance. Schurz started and pitched eight innings of shut-out baseball against the Big Train on July 3. He scattered six hits and a walk while striking out four to pick up the win in that game. Four days later, Schurz came out of the bullpen to close out the game against the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts with three innings of relief work. Schurz allowed no runs on just two hits and no walks and struck out five to earn the save. Honorable mentions for Pitcher of the Week include: Matt Wickswat (Big Train/Santa Clara), Kyle Brown (Express/UC-Santa Barbara), Neal Davis (Orioles/Virginia), and Justin DeFratus (Express/Ventura).
