News & Notes: All-Star Game highlights the start of a great stretch run

The 2006 Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game at Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda was a tremendous success. The stars from both squads put on a fantastic show, highlighted by back-to-back home runs off the bats of All-Star Game MVP Justin McClanahan (Orioles/Louisville) and Chris Nann (Bombers/Northern Kentucky) in the fourth inning. Earlier that evening, Nann and McClanahan slugged it out in the championship of the first-ever CRSCBL Home Run Derby, with Nann winning the title on 14 overall home runs.

But, looking back, the thrill of the All-Star Game will seem like an oasis from more than just the DC-area summer heat! With just a week and a half left in the regular season, the league standings have tightened near the top. Just one and a half games separate the top three teams, the Bethesda Big Train, Youse's Maryland Orioles, and the Rockville Express. The fourth-place College Park Bombers won five of seven games this week and lurk five and a half games out of first place. Byes in the first round of the CRSCBL League Championship Series (July 31 to August 4) await the top two teams in the regular season, and an extra day of rest could prove to make all the difference in the world after 40 games in the middle of the summer. There are 12 days left in the regular season. Which two teams will grab the byes? Which teams will be left out?

Of note: The league has now hit a combined 48 home runs in 182 games played. That's 17 more than the league hit all of last season, and there are still 12 dates of games left in the regular season! This season, Youse's Maryland Orioles did not hit a home run as a team until July 5. Since then, they have hit 12, tying them with the College Park Bombers for the most team home runs this season. Home Run Derby Champion Chris Nann leads the league with six home runs. Charlie Lenhard (Thunderbolts/Akron) and Preston Pehrson (Big Train/Texas) have four each.

He did not walk a batter and struck out eight. Against the College Park Bombers on July 16, Harris allowed one run on four hits and two walks in seven innings. He struck out nine in that game. For the week, opposing batters hit just .182 off of Harris.
