News & Notes: Take the Express route to the top...

The pieces came together for the Rockville Express last week as they won four of five games and two of three since to move within three and a half games of the first-place Youse's Maryland Orioles and just one game of the second-place Bethesda Big Train. After enduring a season-high six-game losing streak from June 21 to June 30, the Express are 13-5 since. The reason? Hitting. While the Express have maintained virtually the same staff ERA in both halves of the season (3.71 through their first 14 games; 3.89 thereafter) and the defense has committed virtually the same amount of errors (29 through the first 14 games; 28 thereafter), the team has hit .282 in its last 18 games, with 26 doubles, 12 triples, and 12 home runs. Through the first 14, the Express hit just .234 as a team, with 23/6/7.

So, though the Orioles lead the league with a 2.21 team ERA and a league-low 40 errors and have consequently found themselves in first place all year, the Express are charging up the standings on the basis of their bats. The final week of the regular season will present a wonderful test of the old adage---do pitching and defense really win championships? Or will the hot bats of the Express carry them past both the Big Train and the Orioles?

The top three teams in the league standings will receive automatic entries into the double elimination round of the 2007 League Championship Series (July 31 to August 3). The bottom four will fight for the fourth of those entries in a one-day single elimination bracket. Needless to say, over the next ten days the scramble for the top three seeds will be fierce.

The race for the top three seeds will remain close over the final week of the regular season, as the College Park Bombers---currently in sixth place in the league standings---are still just five games back of third seed with 10 games to play. Insurmountable? Only one way to find out... stay tuned to the thrilling conclusion of the 2007 Cal Ripken, Sr. League season!

But first, it's time for the stars to shine at the 2007 All-Star Game, Monday July 23 at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen! See below for more details.

Parker (Braves/Virginia), Celenza (Bombers/Salisbury), Buchholz (Orioles/Delaware), McAllister (Express/Delaware State) win weekly awards

Herndon Braves outfielder Jarrett Parker (University of Virginia), College Park Bombers first baseman Mike Celenza (Salisbury University), and Youse's Maryland Orioles third baseman Alex Buchholz (University of Delaware) have been named the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League Co-Hitters of the Week for the week of July 9 to July 15.

Parker hit safely in all four games he played for the Braves last week, collecting eight hits in 14 at-bats. He posted multi-hit efforts in three of those games. On July 12, Parker singled and hit a three-run home run that put the Braves on top of the Bethesda Big Train for good. Parker scored five runs last week and he walked at least once in every game, finishing the week with five. His on-base percentage was .684 and he stole a base in two attempts.

Celenza hit in five of six games for the Bombers last week, including multi-hit efforts in four games. He was 11-for-21 (.524) and posted an OPS of 1.279. Celenza drove in six runs during the week on the strength of four doubles. He also walked twice and scored four runs. In a doubleheader against the Rockville Express on Sunday, Celenza was four-of-six at the plate with two doubles, two RBI, a walk, and a run scored.

Buchholz hit in six of seven games for the Orioles last week, including the last five in a row. Against the Maryland Redbirds on July 13, Buchholz hit a triple and a home run, drove in three runs, and scored two of his own. He finished the week with 10 hits in 26 at-bats (.385), with two doubles, the triple and home run, seven RBI, and three runs scored. He slugged at a .654 clip.

JR McAllister (Delaware State University) of the Rockville Express has been named the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 9 to July 15. McAllister started and tossed eight innings of shut-out ball against the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts on July 14. He scattered four hits and just one walk while striking out nine to pick up the victory and run his record this season to 4-1. McAllister has not allowed a run in his last two starts (15 innings-pitched) and has struck out 16 batters over that stretch. His ERA has dropped to a season-low of 3.38.
