The 2008 Cal Ripken, Sr. League All-Star Game drew a sell-out crowd of over 800 fans to Shirley Povich Field in Bethesda on Tuesday night. Click here to read all about the game!. Prior to the game, Andrew Brouse (Bucknell/Aces) defeated Gavin Swanson (George Washington/Redbirds) in two overtimes to capture the Third Annual Home Run Derby crown. Andrew edged Gavin in the Derby, eight home runs to seven. In the All-Star Game, Leon Landry (LSU/O's) made another highlight-reel catch in centerfield, but the clutch hitting of Jordan King (Meridian CC/Big Train) earned the West's second baseman D-BAT MVP honors.

In regular season action leading up to Tuesday's Big Game, Youse's Maryland Orioles (31-7) set a new Cal Ripken, Sr. League record for wins in a season, eclipsing the Bethesda Big Train's mark of 28, set in 2006. By virtue of the Orioles' 5-1 season record over the Big Train (27-11), the O's have now clinched the #1 seed in the upcoming League Championship Series (July 29 to August 2). The Big Train have clinched the #2 seed over the College Park Bombers (21-15) by virtue of their 4-2 season record against College Park. The Bombers, meanwhile, have clinched the #3 seed over the Rockville Express (14-21) by virtue of their 4-0 season record over Rockville.

And after that? The race for the #4 seed -- the last remaining first-round bye -- is wide open. With the Herndon Braves (14-23), Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts (13-22), Alexandria Aces (13-23), and Maryland Redbirds (12-23) all within 2 games of each other, every remaining game will carry playoff implications.

As for the relatively low output of home runs in Tuesday's Derby (Chris Nann's (Bombers '06) single-round record of eight longballs remained intact), the League has still managed to surpass last season's record-setting total of 90 home runs. And I know what you're saying, the League has one more team than it did last year! True, but this season's home run total of 112 averages out to 14 per team, up from 12.86 per team in 2007.
