News & Notes: It's Crunch Time! Playoff race heats up...

The Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League enters its final week of the 2006 regular season and the race for the top seeds in the League Championship Series (July 31 - August 4) has heated up! The Rockville Express began the week on a six game win streak and has won 11 of its last 13 games to take a one game lead over Youse's Maryland Orioles for the second seed in the LCS. The Bethesda Big Train has won 14 of its last 18 games and holds a one and a half game lead over the Express for first place in the league standings. When the Big Train and Express meet in Rockville on Thursday, one of two things will be decide: if the Big Train wins, they will clinch the regular season championship. If the Express wins, they will clinch a bye in the first round of the CRSCBL Championship Series. For seeding purposees, any ties in the final regular season team records will be broken by a coin-flip. Stay tuned for more e-mail announcements as the playoff picture comes into sharper focus over the next few days!

Of note: Shortstops Allan Smaltz (Orioles/Undecided) and Brian Dozier (Big Train/Southern Miss) have drawn oohs and aahs from ballpark crowds all summer with their spectacular glovework. On July 23 Dozier completed an acrobatic double-play from second baseman Cory Lane (Big Train/UNC Charlotte) after Lane gloved a ball tipped by the Bethesda pitcher. In the same game, Smaltz showed tremendous range into the hole to his right, jumped, and threw out a runner across the diamond in mid-air!
